Youth Soccer
Improve your youth soccer coaching
skills. Your kids will love you for that!
If you are a parent or teacher who is giving
up your time to coach your child or student’s soccer team,
chances are that you would like to brush up on your skills and
build a great relationship with your players. There are a
number of things that can help improve your youth
soccer coaching skills, especially when you are more
of an enthusiastic parent who was unwittingly roped in to
coach.
Know Your Stuff
Kids can see right through you when you are trying to fake
your way through the sport so if you are not savvy to all of
the rules and how to play, figure out quickly! It is rather
hard to teach kids the game of soccer when you yourself have no
knowledge of the game. Brush up on the game itself as well as
practice drills, exercises and even nutrition needs before and
after a game and practice.
Fun, Authoritative Personality Needed
Kids love the grown-up who can laugh with them and pal
around and while that is good, being able to exude authority at
the same time is even better. Set boundaries early with the
kids so that they know what to expect both on and off the
soccer field. Clearly establish expectations but also allow for
detours along the way as you learn more about the kids and
their strengths and weaknesses.
Be confident and positive with the kids and don’t be afraid
to show that it is ok to be disappointed about a lost soccer
game or bad practice. Make the disappointment as a learning
tool to do better and try harder the next time around. Also, do
not be afraid to give praise to the kids but do so on an as
needed basis so that they still can appreciate it.
Be Organized
When it comes to youth soccer soccer, kids can go in all
sorts of directions during practice if you do not have your act
together as a coach. Prepare a practice plan in advance with
the exercises, drills, positions to work on and more before
setting a foot on the field. You have to be prepared to make
split second decisions and change tactics in soccer practice or
in a game if you see something is just not working for the
team. The kids look up to you as the coach and expect you to
have the answers so show that you are prepared and motivate
them to do better.
Soccer is a fun sport and kids love to learn the game and
will excel given the right coaching technique. Do not be afraid
to show the kids what they have done wrong and what they can do
to correct the mistake. Proper guidance is often half the
battle with kids on the soccer field and patience is often a
part of that other half. Remember, you are coaching kids and
sometimes you just have to go with the flow and other times you
have to take a deep breath or two and exert your authority over
a situation. Enjoy your position as a kid’s soccer coach and
your enthusiasm for the game will naturally carry over to the
kids you are leading on the field. They have a natural instinct
to please and through positive leadership, you will reap great
rewards both on and off the soccer field.
